Among the ways in which the pandemic changed our lives, taking away the opportunity to say goodbye to my grandfather in the way we are used to doing in my country of Colombia, was the most difficult.

On April 28, 2020, my grandfather Alejandro, 88, had an accident at home in which he hit his head and fractured his hip. His prognosis was not encouraging, however, by following precautions and the doctors’ recommendations, my grandfather was able to undergo surgery to replace his hip.

Although the surgery was a success, hours later his health deteriorated and a blood transfusion was needed immediately. In Colombia, unlike the United States, when a patient experiences a blood transfusion the patient’s family must replace the transfused units by bringing new donors. My family contacted our friends and asked for their help and their response was overwhelming. The hospital asked us to bring three donors and we brought five whom, without hesitation, extended their arms to save my grandfather’s life.

Unfortunately, my grandfather’s health did not improve and on May 4, 2020, a stroke caused him global brain death and on May 5 his heart stopped beating. The death of my grandfather hurt me deeply since, due to the pandemic I was unable to travel to Colombia and say goodbye. However, I felt that the best way to honor his life and his legacy was by thanking those who donated blood to save his life by donating myself.

I made an appointment with the American Red Cross for a blood drive near my home. However, after the rigorous check-up questions they told me that I could not donate since months before I visited a country where malaria levels are high. I was informed I could donate again a year after my trip.

On May 5, my grandfather celebrated a year of resting in peace, enjoying the heaven from which he surely takes care of and protects me every day. To honor his life, on May 7 I went to a drive organized by the American Red Cross in Fort Worth and this time was eligible to donate.

Although I was afraid, every time I had doubts I thought about how my grandfather always taught me to be thankful and do everything to help those who need it most. After the follow-up questions, checking my hemoglobin level and taking my blood pressure, I sat in the donor chair happy and excited to know that my donation was going to help three people who, like my grandfather a year ago, are having a difficult time and need a blood transfusion to fight for their lives.

After eight minutes the bag was full of that red liquid which brings life and hope. Without knowing it, in addition to having kept my promise to my grandfather, I had become a superhero.

Una promesa me convirtió en super héroe

Entre las formas en que la pandemia nos cambió la vida estuvo arrebatarnos a nuestra familia la oportunidad de despedirnos de mi abuelito Alejandro como estamos acostumbrados en Colombia, mi país de origen: Dos días y una noche en la funeraria, seguido de un católico. misa y ceremonia final en el cementerio rodeado de familiares y amigos.

El 28 de abril de 2020, mi abuelito, de 88 años, tuvo un accidente en casa en el que se golpeó la cabeza y se fracturó la cadera. Su pronóstico no fue alentador. Sin embargo, siguiendo las precauciones y las recomendaciones de los médicos, mi abuelito pudo someterse a una cirugía para reemplazar su cadera.

Aunque la cirugía fue un éxito, horas después su salud se deterioró y fue necesaria una transfusión de sangre de inmediato. En Colombia, a diferencia de Estados Unidos, cuando un paciente necesita una transfusión de sangre, la familia del paciente debe reemplazar las unidades transfundidas trayendo nuevos donantes. Mi familia se puso en contacto con nuestros amigos y les pidió ayuda y su respuesta fue abrumadora. El hospital nos pidió traer a tres donantes y nosotros logramos convencer a cinco personas que, sin dudarlo, extendieron sus brazos para salvar la vida de mi abuelito.

Infortunadamente, la salud de mi abuelo no mejoró y el 4 de mayo de 2020, un derrame cerebral le provocó muerte cerebral global y el 5 de mayo su corazón dejó de latir. La muerte de mi abuelito me dolió profundamente ya que debido a la pandemia no pude viajar a Colombia y despedirme cómo hubiera querido. Sin embargo, sentí que la mejor manera de honrar su vida y su legado era agradeciendo a quienes donaron sangre para salvar su vida al donando sangre yo misma.

Hice una cita con la Cruz Roja Americana para realizar una donación de sangre cerca de mi casa. Sin embargo, luego de las rigurosas preguntas de chequeo me dijeron que no podía donar ya que meses antes visité un país donde los niveles de malaria son altos. Me informaron que podía volver a donar un año después de mi viaje.

El 5 de mayo mi abuelo celebró un año descansando en paz, disfrutando del cielo del que seguro me cuida y protege todos los días. Para honrar su vida, el 7 de mayo fui a una jornada de donación de sangre organizada por la Cruz Roja Americana en Fort Worth y esta vez fui elegible para donar.

Aunque tenía miedo, cada vez que tenía dudas, pensaba en cómo mi abuelito siempre me enseñó a ser agradecida y a hacer todo para ayudar a quienes más lo necesitan. Después de las preguntas de seguimiento, de verificar mi nivel de hemoglobina y tomar mi presión arterial, me senté en la silla del donante feliz y emocionado de saber que mi donación iba a ayudar a tres personas que, como mi abuelito hace un año, están teniendo dificultades de salud y necesitan una transfusión de sangre para luchar por sus vidas.

A los ocho minutos la bolsa estaba llena de ese líquido rojo que da vida y esperanza. Sin saberlo, además de haber cumplido la promesa que le hice a mi abuelo, me había convertido en un superhéroe.
