The American Red Cross is calling for 35,000 volunteers nationwide to Sound the Alarm this spring as we install 100,000 free smoke alarms in more than 100 cities, helping to reduce the number of tragedies attributed to home fires.
The American Red Cross North Texas is seeking more than 400 volunteers to help make homes safer at multiple Sound the Alarm home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events between April 28-May 13. More than a dozen events will be held in Amarillo and across the DFW Metroplex in Azle, Benbrook, Cedar Hill, Dallas, Everman, Fort Worth, Glenn Heights, Lancaster, Mesquite and more. The Red Cross will partner with local fire departments, community partners and the public to install more than 3,000 free smoke alarms.
Sound the Alarm is part of the ongoing Red Cross Home Fire Campaign in which Red Cross volunteers and partners canvass high-risk neighborhoods to install FREE smoke alarms, replace batteries in existing alarms and help families create fire escape plans.
Since the launch of the Home Fire Campaign in 2014, volunteers and members of 4,400 partner organizations have installed more than 1 million smoke alarms, reached nearly 895,000 kids through youth preparedness programs, helped to create more than 340,000 home fire escape plans and replaced more than 51,000 smoke alarm batteries. More than 400 lives have been saved in home fire in which the Red Cross had previously installed free smoke alarms, including three in the North Texas Region.
