By Lisa Morgan, American Red Cross

Nearly three weeks ago, Hurricane Harvey ravaged parts of the Lone Star State, affecting hundreds of thousands of people and prompting the American Red Cross’ largest disaster response and recovery operations on record.

In North Texas, nearly 4,000 displaced Texans found refuge in seven shelters across the DFW metroplex, and volunteers from across the country jumped feet-first into the relief effort across Texas and Louisiana.

While much of recent focus has been on Harvey response efforts, Red Cross North Texas volunteers continued to provide 24-7 support to families across the region. Even in the face of ongoing disaster relief operations, the Red Cross’ work at home never stopped.

On this North Texas Giving Day, we highlight the never-ending good work of our volunteers and the donors who make living the Red Cross mission possible.

North Texas Giving Day provides an opportunity to recognize the volunteers and staff supporting servicemen and women and their families through Service to the Armed Forces programming.

Donations on Giving Day provide an opportunity for a babysitter to learn more about care giving services, or a parent to learn pediatric CPR and first aid.

Volunteers and staff help reconnect families all across the world right from our offices here in the Dallas-Fort Worth area through International Services. Conflict, famine or catastrophic disaster can leave families scattered across an area. Red Cross and Red Crescent societies across the globe work together to help families connect and restore those family links.

Premature babies, accident victims and patients in need receive life-saving blood products everyday here in the metroplex thanks to the generosity of Red Cross blood donors. State-of-the-art blood mobiles are crucial to providing a pleasant and convenient environment for people to donate blood.

This North Texas Giving Day, remember that the Red Cross North Texas makes a difference every day for blood recipients, veterans and active duty military families, caregivers, and families in our community and beyond.
