How to Enjoy Summer’s Last Hurrah: Labor Day

By Sherry Long, volunteer contributor, American Red Cross

Fleeting are the long, lazy days of summer where we often take blissful time off to bask in the sun at our favorite lake or pool to take a refreshing dip.   Before you throw the steaks on the grill or raise the tent for your last camping trip this summer make sure you take these basic steps to enjoy summer’s last hurrah:

  • When boating ensure there are enough Coast-Guard approved life jackets for everyone on board. Adult and children’s life jackets are different styles and sizes. Children and swimmers with little experience should wear life jackets when near any body of water.
  • Always swim with a buddy. If you get caught in a current or experience a muscle cramp, your buddy can call for help.
  • Make sure you have your cell phone and charger.
  • The grill should be at least one, preferably two feet off the ground.
  • Keep blankets and other flammables away from the grill.
  • The grill should be out in the open, always attended and away from buildings, tree branches or other flammables.
  • Long-handled grilling forks and spatulas, designed specifically for cooking on the grill, will assist in keeping the chef safe.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water and eating fresh fruits and vegetables.

Download the FREE American Red Cross swimming and first aid apps for additional tips on how to stay safe. The apps are available on Android or Apple devices.

We also offer CPR, first aid and automated external defibrillator(AED) classes at various locations throughout the DFW Metroplex.
